Unlocking Ascension in Black Ops 1: A Step-by-Step Guide
Unlocking Ascension in Black Ops 1: A Step-by-Step Guide
Ascension takes place in a Russian Space Station at night. Initially, the map will be in black and white until you turn on the power. You start off the game at the bottom floor of the main building, where you can find the Power Switch located on the top floor.
To unlock Ascension, follow these three essential steps:
- Turn on the power.
- Activate the three landers, each located on different sides of the map. Just like doors, the landers require you to trade points (250 points each) to allow them to travel back to the original spawn location.
- Press the launch button right next to the Power Switch, which will launch the missile from the launch pad.
Once these steps are completed, the Pack-A-Punch area will be open underneath the launch pad for the rest of the game. It is advisable to buy Juggernog first to increase your survival chances before round 8.
Additionally, two new Perk-A-Colas have been added to Ascension: Stamin-Up and PhD Flopper. Double Tap Root Beer cannot be found on this map; therefore, there are five Perk-A-Colas available, yet only four can be purchased at a time. Stamin-Up allows you to run for a longer duration, while PhD Flopper prevents you from taking any fall damage or explosive damage—you can even cook a grenade in your hand.
The Pack-A-Punch Machine returns, requiring you to activate the landers and launch the missile. This area will remain accessible for the entire game.
How to Access Ascension in Black Ops 3 Zombies Chronicles
Accessing Ascension in Black Ops 3 Zombies Chronicles:
Ascension is available on Call of Duty: Black Ops III if the player has purchased the Zombies Chronicles map pack. To unlock Ascension, you must complete several steps:
- Use the Lunar Lander from all three locations to the main building.
- Press the launch button next to the Power Switch to launch the missile from the launch pad. This action opens the Pack-A-Punch area underneath.
Achievements in Ascension:
- The map features two achievements, which are not too difficult to get solo:
- The Eagle has Landers: You will need to use all three of the lander locations located in the corners of the map. First, turn on the power, costing roughly 8750 points to open all of the map, then an additional 250 points each to use the landers from their respective locations. After each use of a lander, you will be taken into the spawn room. You do not need to use the lander from spawn, as you can call the lander to each of the locations and use it from there. The Extra Credit Gobblegum along with a double points can be useful for this achievement.
- Chimp on the Barbie: This achievement requires a monkey round, which appears only when at least one player has purchased a perk. The monkeys will attack perk machines and try to steal the perks from the player. There are fire traps located one floor beneath the power switch and one floor above Juggernog. Additionally, the first door you can open on your right-hand side outside is also a fire trap. When a monkey round starts, have 1000 points ready to activate the trap. The monkeys tend to target purchased perks first, so you can wait for the perk to disappear before activating the trap on the monkey or purchase a perk that leads the monkey over the fire trap.
Understanding the Ascension Game Mode: Challenges and Unlocks
Ascension is the eighth Zombies map overall and is available in Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops III. The map introduces new components to the Zombies mode, including Space Monkeys, which replace Hellhounds from previous maps, and the first easter egg quest. A remastered version of the map is available in the Zombies Chronicles map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops III, alongside seven other classic maps.
To unlock Ascension mode in both Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and Call of Duty: Black Ops III, follow these steps:
- Turn on the power.
- Ride three Luna Landers to the map’s spawn point.
- Press the launch button next to the Power Switch.
Once these steps are completed, the Pack-A-Punch area will open, allowing you to modify your weapons.
In Call of Duty: Black Ops 1, the steps to unlock are specifically:
- Turn on the power.
- Ride three Luna Landers to the spawn point.
- Press the launch button next to the Power Switch to open the Pack-A-Punch area.
For Call of Duty: Black Ops III, ensure you purchase the Zombies Chronicles map pack, then follow the same steps listed above.
Additionally, Ascension features two new perks, each costing 2000 points. However, Double Tap Root Beer does not appear in the original map in Black Ops. Each player can have a maximum of four perks at a time, although it is possible to obtain all five (now six) perks at once by using the Random Perk Bottle.
The Main Quest is the Casimir Mechanism, which involves repairing the mechanism and freeing Gersh. The song Abracadavre can be activated by interacting with three Teddy Bears holding a sickle located throughout the map.
Finally, to access the Pack-A-Punch Machine, all lunar landers’ landing pads must be used. After riding all three back to the Centrifuge Room, activate the rocket by pressing the button to the right of the power switch. Once the rocket has taken off, the large door concealing the launch area will open, revealing the Pack-A-Punch Machine, which costs 5000 points as usual.
Easter Eggs in Ascension: Find Hidden Secrets
Here is a guide to finding hidden secrets and Easter eggs in Ascension (Black Ops 1 & 3):
- Activate the Power: Before starting any Easter egg, turn on the power by purchasing the door next to Quick Revive and following the path.
- Main Easter Egg:
- Step 1: Obtain the Gersch Devices.
- Step 2: Throw a Gersch device at the Kasimir mechanism located in the courtyard behind.
- Music Easter Egg: Find and activate three Teddy Bears around the map to play a song.
- Specific Easter Egg Steps:
- Step 1: Throw a Gersch device at the generator near PhD Flopper just outside the map; it will be dragged into the Gersch.
- Step 2: Go to the scrapyard and press ‘X’ at the TV under the stairs.
- Step 3: During a monkey round, locate the buttons near every perk except Quick Revive and press them simultaneously.
- Step 4: At the Pack-a-Punch, stand on the platform for one minute.
- Step 5: Have someone call the Lunar Lander in the following order:
- Spawn to Scrapyard
- Scrapyard to Spawn
- Spawn to Sickle
- Sickle to Scrapyard
- Step 6: Throw a Gersch at the white light in the scrapyard. Then shoot the Ray Gun, Zeus Cannon, and Awful Lawton while throwing a Matryoshka Doll.
- Time Travel Mechanics:
- In the starting room, once the power is on, four dials are located on the walls by Quick Revive; all players must press ‘Square’ (PS3) or ‘X’ (360) simultaneously. This will distort time, eclipse the sun, and bring a giant 115 meteor above the temple in the spawn area.
- You must travel into the past for certain steps. After obtaining Dynamite, shoot the Focusing Crystal above the mud pit temple, charge the crystals, and ensure your 31-79 JGb215 is upgraded for the process to work.
- In the tunnel with the MP5K on a board, plug the four holes with Spikemores. Lure crawlers or a previous Napalm Zombie towards the tunnels, placing the Spikemore facing the holes to ensure the spikes get lodged properly.
Navigating the Ascension Map: Key Locations and Strategies
Guide on Ascension Strategy:
This strategy aims to help players achieve round 10+ with a solo approach.
- Step 1: Rounds 1-2
- Round 1: Buy the M14 and knife only. If funds allow, also purchase Quick Revive. Aim to leave about 600 points leftover.
- Round 2: If you have enough money, open the first two doors. Make a crawlie to ease the pressure, as it is easy to get overwhelmed by zombies in the stairwells.
- Step 4: Rounds 6-9
- Rounds 6-7: Holding your position is the top priority. It is easy to become overwhelmed in PhD Flopper due to the large space. Always have a lander there. Consider buying claymores at the lunar lander in the junkyard, near Stamin-Up. You get two claymores per round, but you can stack them by placing them against a wall each round and picking them up when needed.
- Step 5: Rounds 10+
- By this point, it is home free. You should have a Revive and enough points to Pack-A-Punch (PAP) your guns. A tip for PAP is to wait until your gun is out of ammo; this way, you can regain all the ammo along with the PAP ammo.
- Training Locations:
- The central courtyard where PhD Flopper / Widow’s Wine is located is perhaps the easiest training spot in COD Zombies history due to its giant square shape. Additionally, there are no hellhounds to torment players.
- Monkey Defense:
- The easiest way to defend against Monkeys is to train in the Spawn area and keep track of the rounds. Monkeys typically appear every 5-7 rounds.
Pack-A-Punch Guide for Ascension: Unlock Powerful Weapons
Pack-A-Punch Guide for Ascension:
- Use every rocketpad or ‘Lunar Landers’.
- To access the Pack a Punch area, you must fully refuel the rocket. This can be done by taking each of the 3 Lunar Landers from their areas.
- Go to the power room and press X to launch the rocket.
- Then, go down one level and outside to the giant warehouse door that holds the rocket. At this point, you should see the rocket launch.
- Finally, go inside the giant opened door. Go to the right and use the machine!

Tips for Mastering Ascension: Gameplay Strategies and Tricks
Here are some effective strategies and tips for mastering Ascension in Black Ops 1:
Round 1: Wait downstairs in the Centrifuge area until Zombies breach. Shoot each Zombie three times in the chest and knife to kill. If two Zombies approach together, shoot six shots through both Zombies for additional collateral damage points. After this, fix both downstairs windows.
Round 2: Camp downstairs near the Lander site, and hold this position. Shoot each Zombie three to four times in the chest and knife twice to kill. Make sure to maximize opportunities for collateral damage.
At this stage, you should only have Juggernog and Quick Revive purchased. These are the two Perks you want to concentrate on protecting, as they are your most important Perks. Quick Revive can only be purchased three times in a game, and protecting both together is crucial.
You can now go back to the Power room and activate the Launch switch next to the Power Switch. Then, return to the PHD Flopper Lander site and kill your crawler to begin the next round.
Collecting Dolls: To unlock the Ascension, you will need to take 3 dolls with a Gersh Device. The first one is located below the Pack-a-Punch room, on a pipe; the second is on top of the building to your left when coming from Widow’s Wine to the Spawn; and the third can be found on pipes, right above Stamin-up. Once done, head to the Launching pad area. In a corner, near a mystery box location, you will find…
Additionally, note that effective teamwork is key. You need:
- 1 player with the Gersch Device
- 1 player with the Matryoshka Dolls
- 1 player with the Porter’s X2 Ray Gun
- 1 player with the Zeus Cannon
- 1 player with the Awful Lawton
Cooperation and strong communication among the team are essential. It is advisable to do each node at the end of each round to keep the game flowing smoothly.
For rounds 1-4, or some players may prefer to stay to round 5+, it is effective to remain in the centrifuge room and follow the shooting and stabbing strategy outlined earlier. Allow Zombies to come through the windows so you can rebuild and collect various power-ups that frequently appear during rounds 1-5.
