  • The Ballas established major influence in the crack-cocaine business and formed ties with criminal organizations such as the Loco Syndicate, Big Smoke, the Vagos, and the San Fierro Rifa.

Significant Events

  • The Ballas suffered major losses during a retaliation drive-by shooting orchestrated by Sweet, Big Smoke, Carl, and Ryder in the mission Drive-By. This led to the deaths of several prominent , including Little Weasel.
  • During a gang war between the Ballas and Grove Street Families, Kane’s death at the cemetery symbolizes a significant shift in power dynamics, marking the beginning of the Grove Street Families’ territorial reclamation.

The Ballas’ Role and Influence in Gang Warfare

The Ballas have a long-running, intense, and bloody rivalry with the Grove Street Families. This rivalry, although its start date is unknown, was in full swing by 1987. Prior to 1992, the Ballas controlled the area of Temple, which by 1992 was under the control of the Temple Drive Families. This is evidenced by the fact that the game references a fourth Ballas set known as the ‘Temple Drive Ballas’.

Moreover, the Ballas maintained a large influence over their Grove enemies by distributing crack cocaine into their territory to weaken them. However, upon the return of Carl Johnson, the Ballas and their drug influence slowly deteriorate. As a result, the Grove Street Families begin to regain power and influence over the Ballas as the player progresses throughout the early missions.

During this stage of the game, the Ballas initially emerge as the most powerful and dominant gang. They maintain this status throughout the rest of the game’s middle story while building on their business relationships with Big Smoke’s crack empire, the San Fierro Rifa, the Loco Syndicate, and the Russian Mafia.

The Ballas become major influential players in the crack-cocaine business in Los Santos. They establish ties with the Loco Syndicate, Big Smoke, the Vagos, and others. It is interesting to note that while the Ballas are based on The Bloods, their gang colors are inspired by The Grape Street Crips. The Ballas-Grove Street War is a gang war fought between the Ballas and the Grove Street Families, led by Sean ‘Sweet’ Johnson and his brother Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson.

Furthermore, the Ballas’ leadership, specifically figures like B dope and Kane, remains known, although their origins are uncertain. Over time, the balance of power in the gang dynamics has shifted. The Ballas have been around for more than 25 years and are one of Los Santos’ many gangs that arose in the 1970s dope trade.

Why Do the Ballas and Grove Street Families Clash?

The Ballas-Grove Street War was a gang war fought between the Ballas and the Grove Street Families, led by Sean ‘Sweet’ Johnson and his brother Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson.

The rivalry is often thought to be inspired by Los Angeles’ Bloods and Crips gangs. The Families have a history of a traditional, intense, and bloody rivalry with the Ballas. Specifically, when the gang war started is unknown. However, this intense rivalry is not just about territorial disputes but also about power, money, and respect on the mean streets of Los Santos.

  • The Ballas started making money selling drugs while GSF leader ‘Sweet’ refused to sell drugs, making Grove Street weaker.
  • Many Grove Street , such as Big Bear and B Dup, had left the gang when drugs were introduced.
  • CJ tried to seek their help but B Dup angrily refused.
  • Meanwhile, corrupt C.R.A.S.H. Frank Tenpenny, Eddie Pulaski, and Jimmy Hernandez informed both gangs about a train filled with ammunition heading towards Los Santos.
  • The Grove Street Families managed to take the guns, resulting in the slaughter of all attacking Vagos and some Ballas.

After the death of Beverly Johnson, her son Carl returned from Liberty City and moved back to Los Santos. The funeral was attacked by Ballas, but no one was hurt or killed.

After CJ’s return, while GSF Big Smoke, Ryder, Sweet, and CJ were out getting food, they were attacked by Ballas. They managed to kill all of them.

However, with Sweet incarcerated and CJ away, the Grove Street lost influence. As a result, the Ballas gained major control over Los Santos, including GSF strongholds like Ganton. They worked with the Loco Syndicate and made more money until CJ killed heads of the Loco Syndicate, T-Bone Mendez and Jizzy B, and blew up their drug factory in San Fierro, leading to the collapse of the Loco Syndicate.

Eventually, the Ballas controlled the entirety of what had been Grove Street territory, including Ganton, Grove Street itself, Santa Maria Beach, Temple, and Playa Del Seville, in addition to re-capturing Glen Park.

Understanding the Hierarchy of the Ballas Gang

The Ballas are the largest and most powerful street gang in Los Santos. They have a long-running, bitter rivalry with the Grove Street Families, which is similar to the historical conflict between the Crips and Bloods in real life.

The Ballas were founded in the 1970s and are based on the Bloods, another African-American street gang in Los Angeles, California. By 1992, they controlled most of the streets in Los Santos, driving the Grove Street Families back to Grove Street and a few surrounding neighborhoods.

The gang is split into four sets, which are:

  • Front Yard Ballas
  • Rollin’ Heights Ballas
  • Kilo Tray Ballas
  • Temple Drive Ballas

Their leadership includes various and associates, such as Little Weasel and Kane. The gang is involved in several illegal activities, such as:

  • Drug trafficking
  • Arms trafficking
  • Prostitution
  • Gang warfare
  • Street violence
  • Murder

They are easily identifiable by their distinct purple clothing and often carry weapons like Micro SMGs and pistols. The Ballas control poor neighborhoods primarily on the east side of Los Santos, particularly in areas like East Los Santos, Idlewood, Jefferson, Willowfield, Glen Park, and Verona Beach.

The Ballas have been detrimental to the Grove Street Families. The Grove Street Families, which is based on the Crips, is led by Sweet, CJ’s elder brother. Ryder, Big Smoke, and CJ are high-ranking and are portrayed as more honorable, opposing hard drugs being sold in their territory.

However, the Ballas began earning money selling drugs, while GSF leader Sweet refused to engage in the drug trade, making Grove Street vulnerable. Following the death of Beverly Johnson, her son CJ returned from Liberty City. The funeral was attacked by the Ballas, although no one was hurt or killed.

Furthermore, Big Smoke and Ryder betrayed the Grove Street Families, ing forces with the Ballas to help supply drugs in GSF territory. Players in GTA San Andreas will encounter various Ballas gangs throughout Los Santos, particularly on the east side, and they will attack rival gangs or CJ without provocation.

Kane Ballas: The Impact of His Leadership on the Storyline

Kane Ballas was a significant figure in the struggle between the Ballas and the Grove Street Families (GSF). During the early history of their conflict, the Ballas attempted to assassinate high-ranking GSF member, Sweet. This led to the tragic death of his mother, which motivated CJ to return to Los Santos.

As the game progressed, the Ballas gained power, controlling most of Los Santos and weakening the GSF through drug distribution and betrayal from key like Big Smoke and Ryder. The Ballas were initially dominant in the streets of Los Santos, utilizing crack-cocaine to weaken GSF and aligning with corrupt law enforcement.

Their leadership and business strategies allowed them to gain significant control over the territory. They maintained relationships with both local and international gangs, cementing their status as kings of the streets until CJ and the GSF began their resurgence.

Ultimately, Kane Ballas’ leadership marked the turning point of the storyline. His gang’s dominance led to a fierce rivalry that catalyzed the GSF’s comeback. CJ, equipped with powerful connections and resources, was determined to dismantle the Ballas’ reign. This culminated in climactic battles where CJ and GSF reclaimed their territories, leading to the fall of both Kane Ballas and Big Smoke.

Kane serves as the leader of the Front Yard Ballas but meets his end while attending Little Weasel’s funeral, another member of the Grove Street Families. This was a common occurrence during the gang wars.

Kane is described in the mission “Los Sepulcros” as “Front Yard Royalty,” indicating that he is a noteworthy figure within the Ballas gang structure. Despite their sudden losses, however, the Ballas had a few tricks up their sleeve.

The Ballas are a gang featured in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, appearing as the secondary main group of antagonists in the game and serving as the primary threat.
