Are There Treasure Chests in Every Ocean of Terraria?

In Terraria, ocean treasure chests, also known as Water Chests, can be found in several locations:

  • In the ocean, specifically in pools of water larger than 250 tiles.
  • In ocean caves, which are water-filled tunnels with sand ceilings.
  • In other bodies of water, such as underground areas or smaller pools.

To elaborate further:

  • Water Chests have the potential to spawn in the ocean with a 25% chance of generating within a cave.
  • They can also appear in underwater locations during map generation, regardless of the biome.
  • In addition to containing common chest loot based on their location, Water Chests may also hold special items unique to these chests.
  • Water Chests that spawn in ocean caves have equal chances of containing every primary item.

Interestingly, the only alternate scenario for Water Chests spawning outside of water is in the secret world seed “Not the bees,” where most water is replaced with honey.

Understanding the Mechanics of Water Chests

The mechanics of Water Chests and Ocean Crates in Terraria are interconnected. Understanding these can enhance the treasure-finding experience in the game.

Ocean Crate:

  • The Ocean Crate is a pre-Hardmode crate that can only be fished in the Ocean.
  • It contains items found in standard crates, and always includes one item normally found in Water Chests.
  • Its Hardmode counterpart is the Seaside Crate.
  • Importantly, Ocean Crates can be obtained even if the Ocean biome is Corrupted/Crimson or Hallowed.

Items in Ocean Crates:

  • Items that can be found in Ocean Crates include:
    • Breathing Reed
    • Inner Tube
    • Trident
    • Flipper
    • Water Walking Boots
    • Shark Bait
    • Sandcastle Bucket
    • Shell Pile
    • Gold Coin
    • Various ores
    • Different potions
  • The drop chances for these items vary:
    • Water Walking Boots have a drop chance of 10%.
    • Breathing Reed, Inner Tube, Trident, and Flipper each have a drop chance of 22.5%.

Water Chest:

  • The Water Chest is a type of Chest found in pools of water greater than 250 tiles, primarily in the Ocean.
  • However, they can also appear rarely underground and occasionally on Floating Lakes.
  • Water Chests that spawn in Ocean caves have equal chances of containing every primary item.
  • These chests can be found in any biome, specifically in any location that is underwater during map generation.

What Loot Can Be Found in Ocean Chests?

Ocean Chests contain a variety of loot, including:

  • Trident (22.5%)
  • Inner Tube (22.5%)
  • Water Walking Boots (10%)
  • Beach Ball (23.33%)
  • Platinum Bars (6-16 quantity at 4.17%)
  • Obsidian Skin Potions (2-4 quantity at 4.17%)
  • Spelunker Potions (4.17%)
  • Hunter Potions (4.17%)

Additionally, they are commonly found in oceans and, rarely, other water bodies.

A Water Chest, which can be found underwater, often contains items pertinent to water and is related to the Ocean Chests. Ocean Crates, which are the Hardmode counterparts, also share loot items typically found in standard crates.

Do Ocean Chests Respawn After Use?

In Terraria, all treasure is spawned at map generation. However, the loot is largely renewable.

Water Chests that spawn in Ocean caves (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) have equal chances of containing every primary item. The only exception is on the secret world seed ‘Not the bees,’ where most water is replaced with honey, allowing for different types of chests.

Moreover, fishing has the ability to pick up special biome crates. A biome crate typically has the same loot you’d expect to find in the local chests. Therefore, if you’re missing something from a sky crate, for example, you can use a crate potion and go up to a sky lake.

As for chests respawning, there is no indication that they respawn after being used. Exploring natural caves may require you to dig to find more items.

Exploring The Significance of Water Walking Boots in Treasure Hunting

Water Walking Boots: Significance in Treasure Hunting

Water Walking Boots are an accessory that allows the player to walk on water, honey, and Shimmer. The player moves across these liquids at normal speed without sinking. These boots do not allow walking on lava. Additionally, a stable surface is required for walking on liquids, indicated by a bright line on the surface.

When landing on the surface of water or honey with these equipped, the player will not incur fall damage. Moreover, all varieties of Water Walking Boots (including Obsidian Water Walking Boots, Lava Waders, Hellfire Treads, and Terraspark Boots) can walk on honey and shimmer. It’s noteworthy that using an Obsidian Skin Potion while having the Water Walking Boots equipped allows for walking on lava.

The best way to find Water Walking Boots in Terraria is through Ocean Crates and Water Chests, which have a 9% chance of containing the boots. To find an Ocean Crate, players should start making their way to the ocean. Furthermore, there is a 10% chance (1/10) of finding Water Walking Boots in Water Chests, Ocean Crates, and Seaside Crates across various versions of the game. In Celebrationmk10 worlds, this chance increases to 1/7 (14.29%).

Landings on a liquid surface while equipped with Water Walking Boots will not cause fall damage. If a player is riding a mount with a walking animation while having the Water Walking Boots or its upgrades equipped, the mount will inherit these abilities.

Before the boots could be obtained by fishing, they were a literal nightmare to find, similar to the Lava Charm. To snag a pair of Water Walking Boots in Terraria, it is essential to engage in chest hunting. This involves exploring the Ocean biomes at the far left and right edges of the map. Unfortunately, they are a rare item with only a 9% chance of being found, making treasure hunting a pivotal strategy for obtaining them.
