Exploring Legendary Pokémon Locations in Fire Red 2
Legendary Pokémon Locations in Fire Red 2
In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, players can capture a variety of legendary Pokémon:
- #144 Articuno – Found in the Seafoam Islands, after completing the Strength Boulder puzzle. It’s at Level 50 with Ice Beam, Mind Reader, Agility, and Mist.
- #145 Zapdos – Located at the Power Plant, near the Rock Tunnel. It is also at Level 50 and knows Drill Peck, Detect, Agility, and Thunder Wave.
- #146 Moltres – Encountered at the summit of Mt. Ember on One Island, knowing Flamethrower, Endure, Agility, and Fire Spin, and also at Level 50.
- #150 Mewtwo – Can be found in Cerulean Cave after defeating the Elite Four. Mewtwo is at Level 70 and has moves Psychic, Safeguard, Recover, and Swift.
Additionally:
- #249 Lugia and #250 Ho-Oh can be obtained at Navel Rock with the Mysterious Ticket.
- #386 Deoxys will revert to its Attack Forme after capture in FireRed.
- Roaming legendary Pokémon include #243 Raikou, #244 Entei, and #245 Suicune, which can be found while exploring the game world.
- Mew appears via a special event.
To capture these legendary creatures:
- Bring lots of Repels and strong Pokéballs to enhance your chances.
- Save in front of these Pokémon to avoid losing capture opportunities after a potential defeat.
- To encounter Mewtwo in Cerulean Cave, players need the National Dex, which will cause a Legendary to roam Kanto based on the starter chosen: Raikou, Entei, or Suicune.
For Lugia and Ho-Oh, players need the Mystic Ticket, and for Deoxys, the Aurora Ticket. Alternatively, Lugia and Ho-Oh can be obtained through XD: Gale of Darkness and Colosseum by trading over in Phenac City.
Essential Tips to Capture Legendary Pokémon in Fire Red 2
Preparations for Legendary Hunting:
Before you head out and start hunting, a lot of these Legendary Pokemon can only be accessed once you progress the story at a certain point. Don’t worry, as the Legendary Pokemon will stay in their location if you progress or finish the main story.
Always stack up on Poke Balls and Ultra Balls if you’re able to do so. Don’t forget about the Repels when you don’t want the struggles of random encounters as you’re climbing up the Legendary’s respective location. Maybe bring some healing items as well, but healing your Pokemon isn’t a top priority. As long as you have a full team and catch the Legendary, you’ll be fine.
Have a Pokemon as well that knows Fly or Surf and others that we’ll mention in each guide. Always save first before engaging the Legendary, so that you’ll just load the save file again.
Requirements for catching the Trio:
The Elite Four should be defeated. The National PokeDex should be obtained. Once both of these conditions are met, the Trio, or in this case one of them will start roaming around the Region of Kanto. You will encounter them at random in the tall grasses.
It’s ideal that you do this in areas where there are no encounters above level 49, which is what your slot 1 Pokemon is. Always save the game. With your Max Repel active, run around until you encounter them. This way, all below level 49 Pokemon will not appear. The Legendary Trio is at level 50, so you’ll get the best chances of encountering them.
Battle Strategy:
If your starter is Charmander, then having a Charizard with a strong Fire move is your best friend. Articuno is weak to Fire and Charizard is resistant to Ice. Ice Beam is Articuno’s only offensive move, so you won’t have problems using Charizard unless it gets frozen.
Other good Fire-types like Arcanine (FireRed only) and Ninetails (LeafGreen only) are good. Rock moves are the most effective against Articuno. The only problem is that most s of this move type are weak to Ice. You may be able to blast Articuno with strong Rock moves, but they can also get punished as well.
Legendary Pokémon Overview:
As most of you might’ve already known by now, Legendary Pokemon is often described as a powerful Pokemon in the franchise’s lore. These Pokemon are often mysterious and elusive.
There’s always only one of them that you can catch per game, and sometimes they are version-exclusive and rarely appear in the sequel games.
Catch Rates and Capture Techniques:
Each legendary is assigned a numerical catch rate, as are all wild Pokémon. Essentially, the higher the Catch Rate, the higher the chance to capture. The catch rates of the legendaries are 3; it will be a challenge to keep them in the ball!
It is best to use either Timer or Ultra Balls when going for the legendaries. A Master Ball catches any wild Pokémon without fail, though it may only be obtained once in Silph Co.
Timer Balls begin at 1 and increase every 10 turns, with a cap of 4. This means Timer Balls can have the highest catch rate of any Ball other than the Master Ball.
Ultra Balls can be picked up at most later-game PokéMarts, and are available before you fight your first legendary. You’ll want to stock up on a good number of them; around fifty per legendary.
Always save before the legendary. For Ho-Oh, save before the last spot on the top of the mountain; it will fly down to you. Check the stats in the legendary’s section before you save, and after you compare the stats and are interested, check them here: Metalkid’s IV Calculator.
Make sure you have a maximum of five Pokémon in your party whenever you are about to fight a legendary.
Don’t knock them out or run from them though, as these fabled Pokemon won’t reappear again after. When you use a Repel, the only battle you’ll encounter is with the legendary. Going a bit further, the legendary pokemon changes which area it’s in when you transition to a new area, meaning you can check to see if it’s there and do a simple area transition if it’s not there.
The idea is to have your ‘one under’ Pokémon lead, then have it use an attack. If the legendary goes first, switch to the capture Pokémon and continue the battle. If not, reset. This ‘one under’ should preferably be of a high level, and not use any priority moves.
Location of Legendary Pokémon:
In FireRed and LeafGreen, you can get the 3 Legendary Beasts, depending on your starter Pokémon. The player must beat the Elite Four.
Thankfully, these Pokémon aren’t as elusive as you may think—you can find Articuno, the ice-type bird, deep within the Seafoam Islands off of Route 20; Moltres, the fire bird, at the top of Mt. Ember, on One Island; and Zapdos, the electric bird, at the Power Plant.
What to Know About Mewtwo and Other Fire Red 2 Legends
Mewtwo Overview:
Mewtwo is said to be the strongest Pokémon in the game. It is one of the most sought-after legendary Pokémon in the world of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. This psychic-type Pokémon is known for its high attack and is a pure Psychic Type Pokémon at Level 70. Mewtwo will know the moves Swift, Recover, Safeguard, and Psychic.
How to Catch Mewtwo:
- Defeat the Elite Four: You cannot get Mewtwo until you defeat the Elite Four and become the Pokémon champion.
- Obtain the National Pokédex: Receive it from Professor Oak, but first, capture sixty Pokémon.
- Fix the Network Machine: Find the Ruby and Sapphire. If you have not yet saved Lorelei from Island 4, a scientist will be blocking the way. Inside the cave, look at the braille signs to see which hole to fall down. If you mess up, you will have to start over again. On the bottom level, you will see the Sapphire.
- Travel to Island 1: Give the gems to Celio, who operates the machine on the island. He will connect the regions of Kanto and Hoenn, opening the way to Mewtwo.
- Go to Cerulean City: At the top left corner of the town, you will see an open cave. Inside, navigate the maze to the bottom floor. Ensure your Pokémon team is at a high level (levels 46-70). At the end, you will find Mewtwo. Save your game before battling him, as this is your only chance to catch him, and he is very powerful.
Preparation Tips:
- Come equipped with plenty of Ultra Balls and healing items to withstand Mewtwo’s devastating psychic attacks.
- Lower Mewtwo’s HP significantly while inflicting status conditions like paralysis or sleep to prevent recovery.
- Even for experienced trainers, catching this powerful legendary Pokémon will require skill, strategy, and a bit of luck.
- Max Repels do work on the Pokémon in the cave; however, if your active Pokémon is a lower level than the wild Pokémon, the Repel won’t work. For the best effect, put your strongest Pokémon in the active slot.
Battle Strategy:
Mewtwo’s only damage-causing attacks are Psychic and Swift. Consequently, Dark Type Pokémon and Steel Type Pokémon usually hold up well against Mewtwo. Although Mewtwo is in a three-way tie for strongest Wild Pokémon, making it a good candidate for the Master Ball, it can still be captured using Ultra Balls.
